This question is asked to us hundreds of times — and we are ready to answer it extensively and honestly. Why is solid oak better than particleboard? Not because we manufacture it, but because the numbers and facts speak for themselves. Six parameters. One conclusion.
Composition and Safety for Health
Particleboard: A mixture of wood waste, pressed with synthetic resins — mainly urea-formaldehyde or phenol-formaldehyde. The E1 standard allows formaldehyde emission up to 0.1 mg/m³. However, in an enclosed space, the actual concentration can exceed this figure by 2–3 times in the first few months. Symptoms of formaldehyde exposure: stinging eyes, respiratory irritation, headaches, allergic reactions. Classified by the WHO as a carcinogen upon long-term exposure.
Solid Oak: Solid wood without synthetic additives. It releases only natural phytoncides with antibacterial properties. No toxic emissions.
Winner: Solid oak (unconditionally).
Mechanical Strength and Damage Resistance
Particleboard: Screw withdrawal resistance — 300–400 N. Impact resistance — low (corners and edges crumble). If the edge is damaged — swelling and irreversible deformation upon contact with moisture.
Solid Oak: Screw withdrawal resistance — 800–1200 N (3 times better). Impact resistance — high (dents rather than chips). Brinell hardness 3.7–4.0 kN/mm². Surface damage allows for local restoration without replacing the element.
Winner: Solid oak.
Moisture Resistance
Particleboard: Enemy No. 1 of moisture. Even "moisture-resistant particleboard" only slows down the swelling process. When edge surfaces get wet, the board swells irreversibly.
Solid Oak: When wet — temporary expansion (maximum 0.3–0.5% in width with a 10% change in humidity). After drying — returns to its original state. Natural tannins additionally protect against fungus.
Winner: Solid oak.
Repairability and Durability
Particleboard: Practically impossible to restore. A scratch on the film is visible and irreparable. Average service life — 7–12 years.
Solid Oak: Almost any damage can be fixed. Deep scratch — sanding and recoating. Dent — moistening and heating. With proper care — 50–100 years or more.
Winner: Solid oak (by a wide margin).
Ecology and Disposal
Particleboard: During disposal — not compostable; burning produces toxic emissions due to resins. Recycling is practically impossible.
Solid Oak: A renewable resource under responsible forest management. During disposal — fully compostable or burnable without toxic residues (if the finish is natural).
Winner: Solid oak.
Cost — The Truth About the Numbers
Particleboard table: 5,000–8,000 UAH. Service life: 5–8 years. Over 24 years: 3 replacements = 15,000–24,000 UAH.
Oak table: 15,000–20,000 UAH. Service life: 50+ years. Over 24 years: 0 replacements + 1 restoration (approx. 3,000 UAH) = 18,000–23,000 UAH.
Result: Over 24 years, the expenses are roughly equal — but the owner of the oak table has a high-quality, beautiful, and healthy product the entire time.
Conclusion
Across six parameters: safety, strength, moisture resistance, repairability, and ecology — there is one winner. Particleboard only wins in nominal initial price — and only "in the moment," but not in the long run.
