How to Correctly Calculate the Size of a Dining Table: A Step-by-Step Guide from MebWood

How to Correctly Calculate the Size of a Dining Table: A Step-by-Step Guide from MebWood

The most common mistake when buying a dining table is choosing it “by eye” without precise calculations. The result: the table either takes up the entire room space or turns out to be smaller than needed for a comfortable family dinner.

At MebWood, we help clients choose the optimal size every day. This method is the essence of our experience.

Make a Room Plan with All Obstacles

Do not rely on your eye. Measure the room with a tape measure and draw a plan to scale, 1:20 or 1:50. Mark:

  • Doors and the direction in which they open

  • Windows, as they also require clearance

  • Heating radiators

  • Other furniture in the room, such as a buffet, sideboard, sofa

  • Load-bearing columns or wall projections

Determine the Area for the Table

Rule for clearances from the table to obstacles:

  • Absolute minimum: 75 cm

  • Comfortable: 90–100 cm

  • Ideal, especially with frequent guests: 110–120 cm

Example: a free area of 350x300 cm, comfortable clearance of 90 cm on each side. Maximum table: (350 - 90x2) x (300 - 90x2) = 170x120 cm. A 160x90 table is ideal.

Calculate the Number of Seats

Standard: 60 cm per person along the perimeter of the table.

For increased comfort: 70–80 cm.

  • 4 people — table from 120x80 cm or round from 100 cm

  • 6 people — table from 160x90 cm or round from 130 cm

  • 8 people — table from 200x100 cm

  • 10 people — table from 240x100 cm

Decide — Fixed or Extendable

If 3–4 people sit at the table every day, but several times a year there are 8–10: definitely extendable.

The Elanio extendable table from MebWood: folded size 140x90 cm, for 4–6 people, extended size 200x90 cm, for 8–10 people. Built-in leaf made from the same solid oak — no need to search for “where it is stored”.

Take Chairs or Armchairs into Account

When sitting down, a chair is usually moved 40–50 cm away from the edge of the table. The width of the pulled-out chair + the passage between it and the wall = a minimum of 90 cm from the edge of the table.

Practical Examples with Calculations

Example 1: Room 450x400 cm. Buffet 90x45 along one wall.

Free area: 360x400.

Clearances of 90 cm: maximum table 180x220.

We choose 180x100 — ideal for 6–8 people.

Example 2: Room 320x300 cm.

Clearances of 90 cm: maximum table 140x120.

We choose the extendable Elanio 140x90, extendable to 200x90.

Example 3: Open kitchen-living room 700x450 cm.

You can place a large 220x100 or 240x100 table.

Maximum comfort for 8–10 people.
